At the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, 145 countries agreed to respect the rights of refugees – today’s asylum seekers – while the merits of their legal claims were considered. Surviving persecution, violence, and war, they arrive with few resources: nearly half have an income of $0. AsylumWorks provides them and their families with wraparound, trauma-informed services that complement the work of immigration legal providers – an approach that has been shown to dramatically improve legal outcomes. Their approach works because it recognizes the holistic needs of newcomers; therapeutic case management helps them work through the trauma they've experienced, employment services help them find and retain jobs in their field that pay a living wage, legal navigation helps them understand their rights as migrants and find quality representation, and community services provide spaces to give and receive support and build new social networks. Direct client services are free and available to individuals and families living in the DMV region regardless of language, country of origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, or gender expression.
