The District's children and families are disproportionately exposed to grief, loss, and trauma. They lose mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, sons, and daughters to breast and prostate cancer, and HIV-AIDS. High rates of incarceration and violent crime make matters worse. Wendt Center clinicians are on-site at over 15 schools and other child-provider locations to reach children who are suffering. They also respond 24/7 to homicide crime scenes to provide counseling to family, friends, and other affected community members and are on-site seven days a week at the DC Chief Medical Examiner’s Office to provide immediate counseling and support to those who have come to identify a family member who has died. Over 60% of clients are young, and holistic mental health services and a free therapeutic grief camp are tailored to their needs. Amidst anguish and loss, there can still be hope. Let’s make certain of that.
