In the Chirilagua neighborhood of Alexandria, less than 52% of the Latino population has completed high school and few have a college degree: they have had limited access to formal education in their country of origin. Casa programs in Kids Club, Teens Club, and Casa to College offer holistic support to help children succeed: academic and social-emotional support, health and life skills development, extra-curricular opportunities, service learning, Bible study, tutoring, mentoring, and practical post-secondary guidance. Young adults, many of whom were Club members, can become Local Leaders, teach in the program, and receive professional development and support for continuing education. Adult programs offer English language, Spanish literacy, computer, and nutrition classes. Emergency relief reached over 600 families during the pandemic. Casa’s programming is long-term, uniquely local, culturally inclusive, and designed to create space for indigenous leaders to shine as role models in their community.
