For over a decade, SWT has used the barbershop model to create trusted spaces where Black adults in DC can return again and again to feel safe, seen, and supported. Many are working adults, caregivers, entrepreneurs, and leaders who live in historically under-resourced communities and navigate the daily realities of economic pressure, health inequity, and limited access to culturally responsive support. SWT brings licensed Black therapists and professionals, such as doctors, lawyers, and financial experts, into Black barbershops to facilitate conversations about mental health, relationships, and well-being. A separate monthly gathering at hair studios focuses on reflection and resource-sharing with wellness practitioners, while community game nights serve as social spaces. Additional pop-up events and digital programming keep community members connected. SWT strengthens the health and economic stability of some 650 people every year.
