Founded by four young theatre artists in 1999, Rorschach is known for staging “impossible” plays in unconventional spaces — a rooftop greenhouse, a midcentury firehouse — and for its deep connection to Washington, DC. Its focus on magic realism means in addition to audiences watching fantastical plays unfold in unique locations, they can also embark on self-guided urban adventures that map original stories onto the city’s neighborhoods. Whether in its two annual productions or the immersive Psychogeographies project, Rorschach’s designs engage with the architecture of its spaces, inviting audiences to see the city — and themselves — in a new way. Over 25+ years the company has invited Washingtonians to explore more than 80 locations across the city. Additional artist development programs create a pipeline for local early-career directors, actors, and playwrights, offering mentorship and a professional community. Through Rorschach, all residents can find magic in the mundane.
