Since 2019, HNB has helped over 10,000 refugee and forced migrant families thrive and feel at home in the DC region. Many are newly resettled refugees, special immigrant visa holders, and asylum seekers, mostly from Afghanistan but some from El Salvador, Myanmar, and Ethiopia. Waning federal support for refugees means HNB fills critical gaps, providing families with culturally appropriate groceries as well as household furnishings and items that help make an apartment a home. A program for refugee artisans pays them to make items for new homes, while mentorship, skills-building, and cash assistance ensure newcomers can establish independence by turning a job into a career. Through storytelling training and coaching, refugees process their trauma and share their stories with the greater community — so we can better understand the refugee friends and neighbors among us.
