General Information

  • Volunteer Opportunities / Responsibilities: Academy of Hope relies heavily on community volunteers to give their time as teachers, tutors, and to help with administrative tasks.

    TEACHERS:
Teachers work with small groups of learners (usually between 6-15 learners) in the areas of basic reading, math, writing, literature, science, and social studies. Much of the GED test relies heavily on a learner’s reading ability, so teaching reading comprehension is more the focus than teaching learners to memorize facts related to a particular subject area.

For teachers, the time commitment is 2-3 hours once a week. Most teachers volunteer in the evening from 6:30-8:30. Some volunteers teach in the morning (9-10:15 or 10:45-12:15) or afternoon sessions (1:45-3:45). Daytime classes meet twice a week, so a commitment to teach usually means a commitment to volunteering twice a week, either Monday-Tuesday or Wednesday-Thursday. We require that prospective teachers have a bachelor’s degree.

    TUTORS:
Tutors work with learners in the areas of writing, math or reading. However, if a learner is particularly close to passing the GED test, tutoring sessions might become more focused on social studies, science or literature. Some tutors work with a learner in one subject area, while other tutors work with learners in whatever area is causing difficulty for their learner that week.

For tutors, the time commitment is once a week for 1.5-3 hours. Tutors should have some postsecondary education and be proficient in the subject they wish to tutor.
