For 13 years, after school and in the summer, FAN has provided a safe place for DC foster youth (ages 8-18) to engage in mentoring, academic and enrichment activities, and community service – but most importantly, to experience the consistent care of loving adults. Today, the after-school program takes place at FAN’s new Youth Peer Operated Center, alongside ongoing support programs for alumni and other young adults, parents, and caregivers. A drop-in center (staffed by certified youth peer specialists), mental health workshops, parenting classes, targeted case management, referrals, and more, encourage success in work, college, and life – all within a supportive, caring community. Over 85% of FAN’s participants graduate from high school or obtain their GED, compared with 42% of foster youth citywide. Want to have a deep impact where it’s needed most? This is the place.
COVID-19 Update:
Along with all other programming, FAN has shifted to virtual programming with kits that include materials, instructions, and tablets for all participants. In addition to weekly check-ins with families, staff provide direct service in the form of meal delivery as well as payment for Lyft and Uber transportation to and from work, school, food shopping, etc.
