The goal? A path for youth to become champions for the common good. The tools? Cameras, computers … and creativity. With a focus on youth from underserved and immigrant families, GB Youth Media trains middle and high school students in digital media skills, while challenging them to explore and discuss social and civic issues. At its heart is Promoters, a free, 12-week after-school program offered at schools, community centers, and public libraries across Montgomery County. Participants create short films and other media projects about topics they care about – whether it’s racism, gun violence, or youth homelessness – and then publish them on GB Youth Media’s YouTube channel. An annual youth media festival showcases the best productions among nearly 400 student submissions. The big picture? Youth find their voices, develop as leaders – and fight inequalities that affect us all.
