General Information
- Volunteer Opportunities / Responsibilities: Read Up! is PEN/Faulkner's volunteer program. We have two volunteer roles: Literary Events Volunteering and Writers in Schools Author Ambassadors.
Literary Events Volunteers support day-of author readings that are part of our Literary Conversations series, as well as our annual Awards ceremonies for excellence in contemporary fiction and the short story. Roles can include: check-in table, book sales, seating usher, and event prep.
Writers in Schools Author Ambassadors accompany writers on visits to public and charter schools in grades 4-12. This role includes being the day-of point of contact for the author, facilitating conversation during the visit, representing PEN/Faulkner at the school, administrating post-visit feedback surveys to students, assisting with the author book signing for students, and documenting the visit through an observation form and photography.
We offer at least 5 Read Up! training sessions annually at our offices in Shaw. - Types of Volunteers Needed: individual/adult; individual/college; individual/high school
- Hours Needed: business hours during the week; evenings during the week
