General Information

  • Volunteer Opportunities / Responsibilities: Family Emergency Program - Help process requests, pack food, or deliver food. In the morning (9:00 am - Noon), volunteers process requests for food
    and financial assistance. Volunteers are needed beginning at noon (for about two hours) to deliver food to recipients. Locations: ALIVE headquarters and
    deliveries throughout the city.

    Preparation for Last Saturday Food Distribution - 60-90 minutes of volunteer help is needed to unload non-perishable food at the Cora Kelly Recreational
    Center on the last Friday of the month. This is in preparation for Food Distribution the following morning. Hand trucks are provided for heavy boxes. Many boxes are less than 10 lbs and can be carried by individuals.

    Last Saturday Food Distribution - Volunteers are needed to help bag and distribute non-perishable food and fresh produce to low-income families at 1 of 3 locations in Alexandria. This event takes place on the last Saturday of every month.

    Food Drives - Volunteers are needed to sort and box food received from food drives throughhout the year. Also need volunteers to help sort and box food
    received from the annual Turkey Trot Run/Walk in the City of Alexandria on Thanksgiving morning each year.

    Furniture Pick-up and Delivery - Each Saturday, drivers and volunteers are needed to help pick-up and deliver much needed furniture for low income
    individuals who have very little furniture.

    ALIVE! Child Development Center - Full-day preschool program. An essential need is the maintenance and improvement of our classrooms and playground. Volunteers with maintenance-related skills/interests, such as painting, plumbing, landscaping, cleaning, or carpentry are often needed.

    ALIVE! House - A shelter for women and families. Volunteers with maintenance-related skills/interests, such as painting, plumbing, or carpentry are often needed.

    Housewares - Volunteers needed to assemble starter kits, sort donations, and deliver and pick up housewares.
  • Types of Volunteers Needed: individual/adult; adult groups of less than 5; individual/high school; adult groups of 6 or more, including corporate teams; adult groups of 6 or more, including corporate teams
  • Hours Needed: business hours during the week; daytime on the weekend
